Next day we were off on the road again to Berlin. On the way, stopping to moon a passing topdeck bus. Just the usual day on the tour bus filled with dangerous games, dj wars, funny and sometimes disturbing stories told from the night before and mass amounts of junk food from our service station stops. Berlin was an amazing city with both historical buildings while being much like a bustling modern city. The most notable feature was the Berlin Wall that came down in 1989. You could still see the remnants of the wall which is now used as a canvas for modern artists that used bright colours, bold features and sent amazing messages of peace, hope and possibility. The next day we took a walking tour of Berlin that included the old Berlin Wall that is falling apart and has been left in the same state. We learnt all about the conflicts between the west and the east and how it affected the people of Berlin. Really makes you appreciate the world we live in without such devastating conflicts. We also went to the Holocaust memorial that has been put in place consisting of dark grey blocks in all different shapes, sizes and levels that look like the earth has moved beneath them. Its intension was to resemble the experience of the Jews in the time of the Hitler regime and their feelings of disorientation and their lives being completely shattered. We also went down through one of the old undergrounds that remained untouched when it was closed to prevent any forms of transport from the east to the west. What I loved about Berlin was how much creativity there was amongst history and devastation. Definitely somewhere I would go back to.
First night in Berlin Millie was meeting up with a friend from home and asked if we would like to come along! Though we had dinner provided I jumped at the opportunity to break the routine and spend a night out of the tour environment! So Mille, Vath, Maria and I met up with Aaron and Pat to go for dinner and drinks. Millie and Pat ended up getting a MASSIVE chicken schnitzel, which Millie managed to easily make her way through, plus some of the half that Pat struggled to devour. She claimed that was why she needed Charlie around to eat off her plate to stop her from overindulging haha Luckily we had chosen a place with cheap cocktails and managed to take full advantage while we were there. Next we moved on to a bar the boys had been to on a pub-crawl that was kinda dark and dingy but served alcohol so we weren't fussy. That's where the tequila shots took it to a whole nother level of air musical instrument playing and piggy backing. After a while I looked around and realised that the majority of the crowd were men in really alternative clothing… SURELY a gay bar! Which we proceeded to test with out wild irresistible dancing. They didn't even bat an eyelid- surely gay!!! The night continued at a nearby restaurant also selling cheap cocktails and we splurged on two tasting plates- yummmm. Unfortunate for the other restaurant patrons we then decided to play a loud clapping game kind of like pineapple pineapple that we played in school where you had to repeat people's names and pass it on without stuffing up. Though this was the adult version with accompanying words that shouldn't be repeated in this blog and I'm sure the people around us didn't appreciate having to endure. All in all an awesome night to take a break from tour madness with a great group of people. Thanks to all!
Next night we had all paid to take part in a Berlin pub Crawl! We had all invested in white t-shirts and a limited amount of markers to write various ramblings and notes on one another to show our appreciation and mostly just to write random stuff that had happened on tour. It was a really nice idea and kept us all very entertained the entire night.
After filling up an array on small bars with 30 rowdy topdeckers and getting interrogated by a Berlin waiter about my the intricate details of my non existent sex life we all took the train to the nightclub down the road from our hostel to hit it up with the convenience of a short walk home. For a Monday night the place was PACKED and played the perfect music for us girls to get our groove on on the dance floor.
