MYKONOS!!! We caught our 5-hour ferry ride to the beautiful island of Mykonos choosing to pay less and spend more time on the ferry which actually went by surprisingly fast. When we arrived we got our ferry pick up to our new home located right in the main part of town, which we later explored. The town was filled with jewellery stores, clothes stores, souvenir shops and various food places. All this was packed into tiny streets lined by white buildings down stone paths. It was typically Greek and all the traditional things we could purchase and EAT amazed us! In the afternoon we went to track down Samm and found him in an amazing hostel by Paraga beach! He was only paying 10 euro a night and though the bedding was basic the hostel had an amazing pool overlooking the pristine beach. Definitely a win. There we met his new roommates Georgia and Rhys who were travelling together from Melbourne! We all decided to head out together that night into town to the Scandinavian club. Accompanied by Canadian 1 and Canadian 2- Rachel and Nikki. Rachel was really lovely with a great sense of humour and Nikki was an absolute pain in the arse that kept getting everyone to take photos of herself posing and then tried to blame Sammy when she fumbled and dropped it and then ten minutes later it broke!!! Infuriating. But you win some you lose some (as long and you win more than you loose according to Rhys). The club was packed and played great dance music for us to really enjoy our night. Next day the four of us- Georgia Rhys Samm and Rhys were keen to hire ATVs to explore the island and luckily Elly and Shereen decided to come along :0 The 3 ATVs worked perfectly for the 6 of us though the place where I got mine from clearly jipped me with a dud that at times struggled to start and halfway there ran out of petrol going up the hill!!! I hopped off and ran it to the nearest hill and tried freewheeling it getting as far as possible! Luckily the nearest petrol station was just round the corner so the others went ahead and to the rescue. Thank god! A slight glitch in the days plans, aside from also getting lost due the to fact that people in Mykonos clearly want to keep it a secret how to get around with tiny maps and absolutely NO road signs! But all in all I was just so excited and glad to be on some form of personal transport again!
Having the most driving experience and even my bus license Rhys and I were the main drivers with Samm and Georgia swapping over every now and then. Elly who was extremely reluctant to be a passenger due to the many dangers of four wheelers made the wise choice to come on mine and I did my very best to make her feel at ease so she could enjoy the ride and the overall experience of getting around in Mykonos. And luckily we had her navigational skills to get us to the remote beaches on the other side of the island. Well worth it as we made our way to a pristine beach that was beautiful, calm and crystal clear blue. We took a dip, jumped off some rocks and I ran up and down to drip dry before we headed off to locate another beach and continue the adventure.
We went past a 'lake', which at first looked super dodgy and then spread out into an amazing landscape where we found a cool rock that was like hollowed out underneath! There we stopped to take artistic photos and even a self timed group photo that proved extremely difficult to position then run over rocks and climb up in 12 seconds! I swear I always choose the most difficult locations for self timed group photos! But it is all part of the fun J
We found a nice beach where Wog Boys 2 was apparently filmed and we all stopped to have a feast at the tavern. On our way back we tracked down a deserted bus that was like dug in the ground and all graffitied that we climbed all over and took group photos to before I had to return the nuisance of a bike at 9 J Absolute success. All in all a great day and one I am so glad I invested in! So good being able to get around and properly see the island on our own.
I was SUPER lucky enough to have a friend from my Contiki Croatia Sail be in Mykonos the same time as me!!! We had gotten really close over our time in Croatia and even closer travelling to Greece together and meeting up. WE spent our time lazing by the pool putting on SPF 10 Golden protection that apparently enhanced your glow- that actually just meant that it had glitter in it!! I kid you not, glitter. It made us look like vampires and we loved it haha We enjoyed dinner and cocktails and wine together while chatting all about our lives and travelling and men- I really was lucky to find such a genuine girl that I just got along with and could talk to for hours! So when she left for Ios we realised that I could leave Mykonos early with Rhys and Georgia and come and stay with her an extra night! How we didn't think of that before I do not know! SO then it was off to Ios for me J
