Rachel's Eurotrip
Buenos tardes!
Just got back last night from Barcelona. It was a really fun weekend! I stayed with some friends from school that are studying there. There were a ton of U of M people there because this week is Michigan's spring break a big group of people flew to Barcelona for it, people who didn't study abroad this semester. Also a lot of people like me flew in from other cities to meet up. It was crazy how many people from school were there, take out all the Spanish speaking people and we were right back in good ole AA!
There were a ton of sights to see so I obviously couldn't see them all, but I went to a Dali museum, park guell, and the sangrata familia. But also there are a lot of buildings throughout the city that Gaudi designed that are sights themselves. The Dali museum was cool. He was a pretty crazy guy. I did a report on him for Spanish class in 10th grade. I don't remember that much, but I do know that he was part of the surrealist movement. I will post some of the pictures from the museum, he was definitely a weird guy
Park Guell and Sangrata familia are both Gaudi works. Gaudi like rules this city, its crazy. He was a modernista artist so his stuff is pretty out there, those pictures are definitely worth taking a look at. The park was amazing! It has the longest bench in the world, which is really pretty and has ceramic pieces all around it, hard to explain but very beautiful. And the park overlooks the city because it is built high up, and you can see all the way to the ocean.
La sangrata familia is the most massive, impressive, and weird looking cathedrals I have ever seen. This is gaudi too, definitely worth seeing. The pictures cant even do it justice, it was just so strange that you couldn't stop staring at it. Gaudi ran out of money before he could finish it and it is under construction now by other architects trying to finish it off.
My friends in Barcelona told me that after gaudi ran out of money he dressed as a beggar trying to get money to finish his projects. He got hit by a tram (maybe it was a car not sure) while he was doing this, and they took him to the public hospital not knowing that it was gaudi under the beggar's clothes. When they realized it was him they wanted to take him to the private hosptial, but he said no because he wanted to "die with the people of Barcelona" tragic story. But yea, that's gaudi.
Barcelona is a really fun city, lots of nightlife, though everywhere we went it was basically only american study abroad students. But it was nice to see everyone. The city is wayyy bigger then seville, and everyone takes the metro everywhere. The weather was about the same as seville which isn't fair! Were so much farther south, it should be warm by now. But as I am sitting here writing this in my bedroom, my fingers are frozen! It will hopefully warm up soon!
Tomorrow is an Andalucian holiday so no school Yay!! I am going with a tour group to Gibraltar, so hopefully there will be another post soon about that! Ill try to get my pics up asap!
