Getting used to using the public buses we opted to stay in a small town further up the Mekong river named Chiang Saen. A good bus ride got us there for 9am but we found it really difficult to find a room. The majority of those in the book were closed due to the season but we managed to get a nice room with a Thai family.
There wasn't much to the town although we did have a really nice meal on the banks of the Mekong at a street stall. Wanting to head to the boarder town of Chaing Khong tomorrow we had to find a route there. The internet and books had said there was a limited bus service but we were unable to find any evidence of it, so instead we will get two separate pick-up trucks with benches in the back. Cost about £2 each for the 52 km but with a transfer, not good but we have little option! Tomorrow Chiang Khong.
