Ok so we flew from Saigon to KL, then KL to Denpaser in Bali. We spent one night in Kuta (which bizarely had a Topshop and a Marks and Spencers), then spent a long day on a bus-boat-bus-boat getting to an island off Lombok called Gili Air. We settled in to a basic but delightful bungalow right on the beach and enjoyed our first of many sunsets on Gili Air.
We planned to spend 4 nights on Gili Air but ended up staying 8! We loved the place. Delicious Indonesian food, gorgeous beaches and fantastic diving. First off Tom did his deep diver course so he can now come to 30m with me. We went on four fun dives together and saw LOADS! Turtles, rays, sharks, titan trigger fish, bat fish, eels, lion fish, nudibranches, etc. The visibility was incredible through out. On our last night i did a sunset dive to see the Mandarin fish. They are about 5cm long, bright green/orange/blue and gorgeous. Didn't have a camera so don't have a photo of one but will try and find one on the internet and upload that. We spent the entire dive watching them stick their little heads out of the coral. At one point two of them started mating and began spirling up towards the surface, amazing.
We also celebrated Tom's birthday on the lovely Air. The day started off with coral/shell decorations and a home made card. Then we went for a dive and a walk around the island. We had a huge pile of calamari and fish curry for dinner. The guys that ran our guesthouse built a fire on the beach and we drank a couple of bottles of rice wine with a big slice of birthday cake. Tom turned 23 very happily.
We are having issues with putting photos on in Indonesia.. so apologies for the lack of visuals..
