Wake up at 6:30am for the toilet after hearing LOTS of rain. Think there are no Mosquitos in the bathroom until I pick up the bucket to flush the toilet and about 10 fly up at me!
Pack up our stuff and go get breakfast next to where our boat leaves the island. Get on the boat at 8am and they manage to squeeze lots of us onto the boat (little did I know that this would be a day of having NO personal space). We are sat next to Erwin (Dutch, 19, student studying European culture & languages (speaks Dutch, German, English, French, Spanish)) and Ashley (Australian, from Melbourne, 27, Dietitian), who are Bohr travelling solo, but together at the minute...
We are told to wait near a small shop for about 40 minutes. As it starts to really rain we are told to walk 200m to the bus station - no idea why we weren't told this when it was still dry out. We are the. Given our visa application to complete and hand in to the man helping us today, along with our passport and a passport photo.
After 15 minutes we are put in a bus which takes about 30 minutes to the border. At the border we get off and carry our bags past a mini party (apparently, it's the last day in that particular border crossing). Then we walk through, 200m to Cambodia.
Stop at a small cafe while our passports are stamped and we get our visa. We wait about an hour until the man comes back with the passports to distribute back to everyone. He accidentally reads one person's name as 'Mr Cockblocker' - all English speaking people burst out laughing!
About an hour later (about 12) we get on a bus which drives us down a REALLY bumpy road for about an hour and a half to Krong Stueng Traeng. We get out and wait around for about 40 minutes in a restaurant type place before we (and our bags, most of us with 3 bags) are squished onto a minivan. All 19 of us get moving at around 3pm.
After 2 hours we are freed from being cramped in the van for a quick break and dinner - have boiled rice with hot sauce. At 6ish we are on the way again but are told it's going to be another 6 hours from here!
It's now dark and the roads are so bumpy and the driver drives WAAAY too fast! About 2.5 hours later we stop at a petrol station to stretch quickly before our last 2 hours of the journey, or so the driver promises.
In the way again and the driver stops randomly to buy some fruit, everyone just wants to be there now, and we can't get off so this is not a welcomed stop. Go to sleep about 45 minutes before we arrive, not rally sure how as the journey was so scary, but also entertaining when dark as there's a huge lightening storm ahead, lighting the entire sky blue from the lightening fork!
Arrive in Phnom Penh at 10:40pm, but we are dropped off in the middle of no where - this obviously just arranged that they drop us near to the Tuk Tuk drivers who they are friends with and then they charge lots to take us anywhere. They want $5 each person, and the whole minivan say no as we are fed up and want things to be fair. Finally everyone agrees to $3 each. Drop off a girl at one hostel, she forgets to lay but we don't have to pay so that's fine!
We end up going to the same hostel as Erwin and Ashley and stay in a 4 bed with them. Ashley, Rikka and I go downstairs for. Quick beer and then head up to bed at midnight, what a day!
