We arrived and found a local place to eat, then chilled out in the room for the first night.
We met Maarit at her hostel as it was her birthday and went to get breakfast. We argued with the tuktuk driver on price for the days hire. Maarit finally went to ask another driver, then the original driver agreed to our price of $12 to take us anywhere. We headed to the killing fields first, where 17,000 people were killed, safe to say it was a morbid experience. We then got a bumpy tuktuk ride to the killing field museum. This was just as morbid. It was where they kept some prisoners before they were executed. After a sad few hours we all decided it was best to cheer up and drink beer. We found a place to eat, sticking to my insistence of eating the local food I had bangers and mash. We found a roof top bar looking out over the river for sunset. We proceeded to find more bars with happy hours. The night ended pretty early as we were all shattered from the long trip the day before and the early start. At night all the tuktuk drivers turn into drug dealers and we got offered a lot of weed.
The next day we arose late, walked around the city and found a bar on the river front that sold 2-4-1 cocktails. After a few hours spent sampling all the cocktails on the menu we ordered some food. We planned to go to cinema during the day but didn't make it so we went to an evening showing. We ended up watching Jack Reacher which was pretty good!
The next day was spent walking around the city with no plans. We got an early dinner a good distance away from the main tourist area. We ordered food and a 3 litre jug of beer. After we drank the first jug a group of locals decided to join us. We ordered a couple more jugs to share with our new found friends. We left the restaurant and stumbled upon a theme park. Naturally we went in and found some more locals to hang around with till it closed at midnight, we found bumper cars after a few beers incredibly funny, but I found out that whiplash is real.
Our last full day was spent seeing the temple and Pagoda while complaining of a hangover. We booked our transport into Vietnam. We decided to book a boat from Cambodia into Vietnam where a bus would pick us up and drive us to Ho Chi Minh city.
A prearranged tuktuk picked us up and dropped us at the ferry port. I got some bacon baguettes for the trip while James made sure the boat didn't leave without us. We walked down to the boat, it was long and thin with 20 westerners packed on board. We got seats at the back outside. It took around 4 hours to get to the Vietnam border where we got off and walked along an old plank of wood. We went to a little hut and handed in our passports, we also handed over $1 each, a bribe for the passport control guy to let us in. As far as bribes go its pretty cheap. We got back on the boat and after another hour we got to land Vietnam side where we got a bus. The bus was actually pretty cool, with a plasma TV and WiFi. Sadly it broke down after 3 hours. We got off and found some street food, where some old vietnamese guy stroked my chest. He quickly stopped when he saw the expression on my face. We ate some hotpot with an English girl we met on the bus. Some other guys offered me some shots when leaving, not to be rude I drank them. After an hour another bus picked us up. There was no TV or WiFi which was disappointing. After another 3 hours we got to Ho Chi Minh city around 1am.
We shared a taxi with the English chick and found our hotel down a little alley way. We had to wake someone up to get into our hotel though.
