Worn out from the last 48 hours of travel and the whirlwind tour of Milan, we accidentally overslept till 11am (who says they overslept on their vacation?). I ran out to the grocery store and picked up eggs, bacon, croissants, milk, OJ, and several other things; 40E for breakfast for 3 days in our apartment is way cheaper than going out to eat for 3 breakfasts.
Our 2nd ice cream in Nice in less than 12 hours! We stopped by the ice cream place 2 blocks from our apartment that I went to last night for a snack for the girls. It's off to the beach via the Promenade des Anglais. The beach in Nice is rocky like most Mediterranean beaches, and the rocks are of the large variety, which makes it terribly uncomfortable to walk on and since our apartment doesn't come with beach towels or mats, we opt for renting a lounger and umbrella at Castle Plage. The water is uncomfortably cold, anyone coming out of the water has red skin from the coldness, so unlike MD, I opt to sit on the water's edge with my legs in the water, while she goes barreling in head first! Mamma doesn't want to go into labor because of the cold water so she stayed out entirely. The girls enjoyed a short nap on the lounger, while I downed a huge ball of mozzarella, tomatoes, and crusty bread; along with an $8E Corona (because the cafe only has Corona and Heineken, and the Heineken is $10E!). The rest of the afternoon was spent lounging on the chairs until the clouds started darkening around 5pm and we opted to leave before the rain came down.
Literally right across the door from our apartment is an Irish Pub called "The Snug" (the owner is super awesome, the first night here he helped me carry our bags up to the apartment, and today he sold me an awesome Kronenbourg beer glass). We decided to drop in for a beer (me only) and a snack to hold us over until dinner (restaurants don't even open until 7pm here. Its quite common for people to show up for dinner at 11pm in France. The "double up deal" is any 2 appetizers for $12E, so the girls had nuggets and wedge french fries; which was the first meal that both of them finished on this trip so far!
Up to the room to change for dinner, and then down to Cours Saleya, where there is a market (of some sort or another at all times) down the middle and literally about 50 restaurants side-by-side on each side all the way down the street. The market is a flower/fruit/veggie market all day, and then a trinket/craft market all evening/night. It's a pretty cool street, one end is very pub/bar oriented while the other is nicer restaurants, and the middle is mostly cheap, touristy restaurants. After a pass down both sides and the middle to shop, we stopped for our 3rd ice cream in less than 24 hours! Maclaren is an "ice cream monster", screaming "ice cream" in a deep throaty roar every time we pass an ice cream shop (which is quite regularly). The World Cup is going on right now, tonight is the Spain/Italy game and half the street cheers for one team, and the other half for the other team every time something half interesting happens (you know how boring soccer can be!)...but the cheering crowd and all the waiters running to the closest TV each time the crowd cheers makes for a really fun atmosphere. MD passed out in her stroller, so Heather and I pulled up to share a little pizza and champagne over a romantic candle :)
