This morning we got up had a leisurely shower and breakfast and off to the Palace Grand Theatre. First however was a drink for Clancy. Now Dawson City is not a place to fill the car, if I had not been concerned about the likely opening of service centres along the way I would not have poured the liquid gold into the machine. Our most expensive petrol!
The Palace Grand is a magnificent old building fully restored and maintained, it is still used by the townsfolk for functions and other activities throughout the year. After the tour here we did a little trinket shopping and then it was off to the Museum
The Dawson City Museum is another interesting place full of history and artefacts it is the advantage of 75% of the town up and leaving with everything where it was. So there is a lot of period items along with an excellent geological and geographical display of why there was a gold rush.
To complete our Dawson City Cultural tour we said goodbye to the town and drove out to Bonanza Creek to see the Dredge that was used right up till the 60's and it was amazing and it also left me wondering about the way people view history. Like the copper mine at Kennecott this was an economic masterstroke, mind you the worker treatment and OH&S was atrocious along with some of the environmental standards all said I say "let's mine"!
Now we were leaving Dawson City to head toward Whitehorse my thoughts had included a side track to Tombstone on the Dempster Hwy and a trip up the silver trail to Keno. After some consultation and a little soul searching off to Whitehorse did we drive.
The journey showed just how quickly the Yukon does close down, many of the sites/attractions I did want to see had closed either for the weekend or the season, thus providing me with the excuse to return to the area.
Given the length of the journey and the likely late arrival we stopped on the way and made ourselves dinner. There were many scenic parts of this journey and so it was that we ate while the Yukon River rushed past us.
Around 9:00pm we arrived in at Whitehorse and pulled into the Hi Country RV Park www.hicountryrvyukon.com although it was closed we stopped at the same site. Thankfully they had not changed the codes for the bathrooms so at least that was available till the morning.
