This morning we headed into the offices to bookin for last night and tonight. The owners were not too upset about our presumptive parking and with accommodation organised. It was back to breakfast before heading into town to undertake our adventures for the next day and a half.
We arrived in at the Visitors Centre and when we asked about availability of attractions we were given a sheet highlighting how soon it would be for things to close down. Now this was a holiday long weekend and some of the attractions had already closed and others were closing today. So we went through the open list and decided to call from the centre the Yukon river cruise people to make sure we could get a place. This was one of Shoeleh's new found desires with the Yukon Territory. Thankfully they still had space for us, so booked we headed out.
First stop was the S.S. Klondike http://www.pc.gc.ca/lhn-nhs/yt/ssklondike/index.aspx this was another of the stern wheelers that had plied her trade up and down the Yukon till the road went in and the bridges were too low for them to continue their journeys. It was quite cold and windy along the bank and on the boat but we ended up spending a fair bit of time exploring.
There was still plenty of time between when we finished on the Klondike and the river cruise so we decided to head for a walk around the river. There was a trail of about 4km that took you over the river and via the Fish ladder http://www.yukonenergy.ca/energy/facilities/fishway a facility that closed for the winter so we saw not the fish jumping their way up to the top of the dam.
The walk way provided us with some amazing views of Eagles and Ravens, lets say they were playing up along the cliffs above. It seemed like a very serious game of tag. Providing us with lots of opportunities to attempt to take photos of the birds at play. A little further along there was an eagles nest on top of a pole in the carpark. The nest like the one in Homer was huge.
The rest of the walk led us past the dam and through a birch forest that had been visited by some beavers who had made short work of a number of the trees in the forest and not just small trees some of these were quite substantial.
With the walk finished it was time to set off for the river cruise and have some lunch. WE decided to have lunch at the pier so that we would not be late for the cruise. When we arrived we settled up our account and then settled in for our lunch. While we were eating some others came to join the cruise but it was booked out.
Now even though we were in Clancy at the pier we managed to be the last ones onto the boat. The Yukon River Cruise http://www.yukonrivercruises.com/index.html takes you from the dam along the Yukon toward the Alaskan Border and provides great commentary and opportunity to see and experience the river. It again makes you wonder at the tenacity of the gold rush people as the river even in a modern boat, with the river elevated by the dam was still tricky to navigate. The journey sort of whet the appetite to come back and hike the river trails which seem to be full of history very interesting and challenging too.
On our return we drove along the river front drive with the intent of meeting the Waterfront Trolley car ride http://www.yukonrails.com/waterfront-trolley/ this is another tourist attraction that was having its last day. So we rode the length of the journey up and back. The weather sort of decided us against the idea of walking the journey back. It was now overcast and quite windy. The other advantage of the trip on this day was as it was last one for the season all travel was free.
We decided to do dinner at the Klondike Rib & Salmon BBQ restaurant http://www.klondikerib.com/ the restaurant had pretty good reviews and when we got there it was full of both locals and tourists so it seemed like a good place to eat. The meals were more than large enough for the two of us and were very enjoyable. The seating was a little like pubs so you shared your table with others whom we got chatting with about our holiday adventures.
This was the end of a very busy day and so we arrived back at the Hi Country RV Park www.hicountryrvyukon.com to get ourselves prepared for the next part of the journey. And importantly to make sure we awoke early enough to get up and get Clancy to her service appointment the next morning.
