Back in Melbourne in the same hostel as before. Spent the whole of yesterday sleeping pretty much, after our little adventure in Wineglass bay on Friday night.
So far in Melbourne we have endured several walks through the city getting lost, a neighbours trivia night where I had my picture taken with Karl Kennedy and went to the Melbourne Gaol which really was fascinating. Not only is it the site of 135 hangings, including Ned Kelly, but Chopper was also arrested and held here. I spent hours walking around each cell, most of which have a head mask displayed. For some reason back then psychologists and criminologists believed that the size and shape of the head defined whether or a not an individual was prone to criminal or murderous behaviour so they took casts of the heads of everyone hanged and made them into masks so they could study them.
There was also a section dedicated to female prisoners which really struck a chord with me. Not just for my criminal behaviour but because I had been so naive previously in not realising how much s*** women went through. The women's wing of this prison was mainly in operation during the Gold Rush era. Many of these women were victims of abandonment from their husbands who had either died whilst working or travelled for work and gone missing. These women were normally left with no money and young mouths to feed. Back then no company or establishment would employ women, so if they didn't resort to prositution, many of them were reduced to abandoning or neglecting their own children, which led to them being imprisoned if found out. At the time, female criminals were seen as the lowest of the low and depicted as ugly, inhumane beasts in the newspapers. Seeing all this made me feel so lucky to be where I am now.
Today we were supposed to go and do the Neighbours tour but we got the time wrong and missed it! Gutted! So instead we did a bit of shopping and headed down the to Greek Festival.
The plan now is to pick up the camper van tomorrow and instead of travelling up to Darwin, we will now just take it Adelaide, where I am going to catch a flight to Brisbane and meet my friends in Bundaberg to begin fruit picking! I can't wait to see them!
Oh and my sister has asked me to do a reading for her at her wedding ahhhhhhh! I am really pleased that she asked me too but I know I will be bricking it the whole way through! As long as I don't stutter I should be ok!
More updates later!
