Cap Haitien was a downright sleepy port town compared with Port-au-Prince. My hotel, Habitation des Lauriers was set up a steep drive way off of Rue 13. At the top of the driveway, I was rewarded with views of the entire town from the cathedral to the port. Habitation des Lauriers is a family run affair. Brenda, her husband Les, and son James could not have made my stay more welcome. All three were a wealth of knowledge, they even arranged my day trip to the Citadelle la Ferriere. The air conditioned rooms in the main hotel each had balconies overlooking Cap-Haitien, and the budget rooms even higher up the hill were sparse but clean, each equipped with ceiling fans, and looked out toward the hillside. Breakfast was top notch, eggs to order, fresh fruit, sour cherry juice plucked from an adjacent tree, coffee and pastry. Dinner was also available, the fish filet was perfectly prepared, the beef filet a bit less so, but when your dining table is in view of the bay why order beef? All in all, highly recommended.
