In 1542, Spanish explorer, Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca discovered Iguazu Falls in route to Asuncion from the Atlantic coast. I cannot fathom the fear and awe that must have washed over Cabeza de Vaca as he approached the falls. When I walked the path toward the edge of "Devils Throat", the roar of rushing water was so loud that I felt it deep in my stomach. Even nearly 500 years later the falls are still so spectacular that it is difficult to comprehend that was created by nature. It is an Eden of lush vegetation, teaming with life. On the "Lower Circuit" trail, curious butterflies surrounded me, perching for a moments rest on my head and shoulders, before fluttering off to a new curiosity.
Buses run from the Puerto Iguazu bus station every 20 minutes (100 pesos there and back). Entrance into Iguazu National Park is 260 Argentinian pesos. The Park is clean and modern. A train transports tourists inside the park from trailhead to trailhead.
