So we had a leisurely morning getting ready and eating breakfast before leaving at 11ish to meet our friend Rosie. Rosie lives near Melbourne and goes to uni here, but Vicky and I met her on a bus from Cambodia to Thailand, where she spent a week with us in Koh Tao (those of you who have been avid blog readers from the beginning should remember Rosie!).
We saw a Krispy Kreme shop so we all bought a doughnut (calorific but very tasty) and then jumped on a tram to St. Kilda, a beachy suburb of Melbourne. I still haven't paid for a tram here...I like to live life on the edge.
In St. Kilda we had lunch at a hippyish vegetarian place where you only pay what you feel the meal was worth. I had a lovely chickpea curry and we all shared a starter of Japanese pancakes. I paid $4.95, I would have paid more but it was the only change I had!
We then walked along the beach where we met Rosie's brother and his fiancée and had a chat, before heading to a bar and ordering some wine. It is so nice to be able to sit outside in the sunshine. Apparently the weather has been bad here so we are lucky this week - blue skies and sunshine so far!
When Rosie left the bar, Anna and Jon joined us. We left almost straight away to go and get ready at our hostel.
At 7pm we met Jon and Anna in Fed Square, where we had planned to watch what we thought was some free comedy. On the way to Fed Square we were accosted by another comedian, Sanderson Jones, who gave us a flyer and then gave us the spiel about his show. It did actually sound quite good and it was free to get in and you pay what you thought it was worth on the way out (like the veggie restaurant). Seeing as the comedy we had originally planned to see cost $13.50, we decided instead to go and see Sanderson later on at 10pm. We hadn't eaten so we went to McDonald's (I only had a $2.45 chicken snack wrap) and in the style of true stingey backpackers we drank goon from water bottles which we had prepared earlier.
After our Maccas, we met Seonad (sp?) and John, who are family friends of Hannah's over here on holiday. We ended up spending a couple of hours in a nice bar with them and John very kindly picked up the bill which included a couple of bottles of wine and some beers - it was really nice of him considering he only knew one of us out of the five! They were a really nice couple to chat to.
When we left them we headed straight for the Sanderson Jones show - it was in the back room of a tiny pub, and there were probably around 30 people in the audience. He was a obviously a little bit nervous but he was really funny - definitely has potential. He remember my name from our street meeting earlier so he kept picking on me which was quite embarrassing!
After Sanderson we went to a backpacker bar called Turf, and had a dance for a bit. Anna and Jon left before us, but we left quite early at around 1am and got a taxi back. It was a good night though!
