Hello from a sleeper train from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur on the 23rd Oct. I am writing this first as a draft from my iPod touch and will upload it as soon as I get hold of some wifi.
So I met my good friends Pauley (from uni), Ric (from uni), and Jeff in Singapore airport which was pretty mental. I will explain how this random occurrence took place. So I was unable to go diving off of the East coast of Borneo in a place called Sipidan as originally planned due to Norman the tropical ulcer (under the Doctors recommendation), which was pretty crappy as that would blatantly have been amazing. However every cloud has a silver lining, Pauley from uni left me a message on facebook saying that they were landing in Singapore on the 20th Oct and would our paths cross whilst I am in Asia, so I booked myself on the first flight to Singapore to meet them. That wouldn't have come about if it weren't for the lovely Norman (the tropical ulcer)..........everything happens for a reason :-)
So after getting over being super weirded out that I was with some of my boys from uni we set off to find a hostel for the night. After trekking around the streets for ages we found a place called World Service Inn or something along those lines, in China Town. It was basic but ok, apart from the fat snoring Walrus that Ric had sleeping under his bed, who we later found out liked to sleep naked, to our horror. He also had studs and ring piercings all the way along his gooch and ball sack, literally peppered, not a pleasant sight is an understatement eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeew.
Ric kept rocking the bed everytime the Walrus started snoring, but it was only ever a temporary fix. Oh did I mention that he stank too..............dirty b******.
However before the first nights sleep we did explore our surroundings, all of us fancied taking in some Singapore culture so we opted for McDonalds :-) and made our way through the menu :-) we probably had a 3 course meal by the end of it...............diiiiiiiiiiiiiiiirty.
After rolling out of Maccy D's we explored the alley markets of China Town which were really cool.
Singapore has got to me the most sterile place on earth, but not in a bad way. Chewing gum is banned, there are $500 on the spot fines for offences such as littering, smoking anywhere other than a designated area and drinking or eating on the street...........pretty crazy. Oh forgot one, J walking, this also receives a $500 fine if caught...... better be careful.
The night went as per before with fat Walrus growling away.
The following day we all turned a tad gay and shopped for the entire day. Singapore is bloody expensive, even more so than London in many cases, but there is just so much of it and so much temptation. Needless to say the wallet took an absolute beating. We were all absolutely shattered by the end of the day, girls I like a good shop, but god knows how you can carry on for so long.
After our very homosexual day I managed to persuade the guys to hit the Clarke Quays of Singapore which is basically a district full of ridiculously expensive bars on the river, it looks mental though. All I could think of as a comparison would perhaps be Alice in Wonderland meets Alton Towers, it's just mental, and all so new. Everything looks like it has been built in the past 20 years, I tell you all that is missing are some hovering cars and we'd have the city of the future. It's just cool and weird at the same time. I must say as well that it is super safe here and i think that they have one of the best crime rates in the world, you could happily walk the streets late at night and feel really safe.
No walrus in the hostel for this night thank god, so that was all good, his smell lingered on though to our disgust.
Today (22nd Oct) me and the guys booked our sleeper train ticket to KL. By this time we were becoming pretty familiar with the area which was quite cool. Oh I forgot to mention that we have been eating lunch and dinner and sometimes breakfast at a place called Maxwell food centre (a hawker centre), which basically consists of a load of different kitchens owned and run by different people selling amazing cheap food straight out of Singapore. There are so many cultural influences on the food here which makes for some great flavours. You basically have Malaysian food with awesome Indian flavours................its goooooooood. The food really is great and probably the only thing, coupled with transport which is a damn site cheaper than London.
Myself and the boys explored more of Singapore and the docks where there are numerous amazing buildings that I don't know the name of, but recognise from watching megastructures :-). I wasn't planning on coming to Singapore before meeting the guys so my knowledge of the buildings etc is fairly poor as I haven't read up on it.
I abandoned the guys for a few hours to meet up with a girl that I met in Cambodia called Pri, whilst the boys went to the cinema. I had a really nice time, I only found out that she was here in Singapore late last night (21st Oct) which is a shame as she knows all of the sights around Singapore as her sister lives here..........oh well.
After a few pleasant, but expensive drinks with Pri I had to fly and meet the guys outside the cinema, before shooting down to the train station.
And here we are now, we just passed immigration into Malaysia, it is currently 0:30am and we should arrive into KL early in the morning.
I promise I will finish the Borneo blog as soon as I get time, it is just an action packed epic that's all. I am not too sure whether you receive updates when I edit a blog, if not keep checking the Borneo one as I keep adding stuff to it when I get the chance.
Speak soon, over and out from KL X
