So we set off on New Years Day, to get to Waitomo, we were planning to go blackwater rafting and abseiling. The hostel we stayed in was great "KIWI PACKER WAITOMO" I would deffo recommend it it has everything in close proximity of it. We went blackwater rafting at 12 after a massive fry up at the hostel $12 and it was huge, wish I was hungry enough! After struggling to climb into a damp smelly wetsuit, I had to put big white gum boots (wellies) on and a really nice blue hard hat with a prehistoric light on! Once we were all ready we piled into a van and drove to the cave entrance, the driver was a maniac I didn't think i'd make it to the cave to be honest, I thought we would end up over the edge of the cliff! Once at the entrance we had to choose a inner tube (all looked the same to me!) and we were off on a lil trek into the cave. It was wet, slippy, cold and we all looked like summit off a sci-fi movie, but at least we all looked the same! After what seemed like an eternity we reached water and were able to sit in our inner tubes and float in the dark on our tubes holding the person behind and watching the glow worms above. As we approached rushing water you were thinking "oh crap, how high do we have to jump!?!?" The first one was worse than it looked as you had to jump backwards, I think it was only about 4 feet but it was fun. The next was a slide 9 feet high so you threw your tube into the abyss and slide down after it, awesome! Deffo wish i'd had time to do the scarier cave trip, but we had already booked the abseil. After a lovely long hot shower and big cups of tomato soup, we were off again into the bush to do our abseil. At a little hut a guy called Jason rigged us out in more fashionable clothing and loads of ropes and metal clips! He was kool and well experienced, a funny guy too telling loads of stories 'bout his job. We had a little 5 minute walk and we were at the top of the gorge, 150 ft high. He showed us how to use our equipment and tips how to go fast and slow and we were off (with him just behind us all the way though!) It took forever to get down and at the bottom when you looked up it seemed way higher than when you were at the top! We done it twice and the second time we reached the bottom Matt decided he wanted to climb back up the rope instead of the stairs with us 2! Well he got stuck halfway up! he said a piece of equipment had jammed or summit but I think his fear of heights kicked in when he realised he was alone and it was him who froze, lol. Well that was it for an action packed day, so we set off for Rotorua.
