This morning we went on the city tour of Dubai, which seemed to be all shopping stops. I bought a belly dancing outfit and a costume for my dog for my Africa themed house warming party at the souvenir market near the gold souq.We visited the Dubai museum, which seems to be the only thing remotely old in the entire city. They have a wing showing, a carpenters shop, a jewellery shop and blacksmith, all with videos of people working in them.I thought it was funny that this is still part of daily life in Egypt, a place that actually seems to have a history.
We visited the Burg al Arab and had a five minute stop to take photos and drove past the Burg Khalifa, slowly enough to take a photo of it.The Burg Khalifa is the world's tallest building, one hundred and sixty five floors.
Overall, I have found Dubai to be very contrived. It doesn't seem to have any identity and anything remotely old has been knocked down by the ultramodern wave of the future. There are countless shopping centres, also the biggest in the world, markets, something they call a souq, but doesn't resemble anything like one….everything is aimed at tourist dollars.
After the tour, we went back to the hotel and hailed a cab to take us to Abu Dhabi, the drive took about an hour and a half and we checked into our hotel the Grand Continental. We went and had lunch at Pizza Hut and then went for a stroll down by the Corniche, the road going along by the river. It was unbearably hot and really humid, so that didn't last long.We got back to our room saturated with sweat and had a rest.We had some light refreshments in the hotel café and then went off to bed.
