Day 1 - No Shower
First thing this morning we all had to go down to immigration in Khartoum and register as tourists in the country.Sarah gave me all the information and we all went down there in the already searing heat. The process to about an hour and a half to get the whole group through, by which time it was about 12pm and really hot. Some of us then had to go to the ministry of tourism, to get licences so we could take photos, which I thought was a bit extreme.
After we managed to finally get through all the red tape, Siobhan, Yngvar and I went back to the Afra shopping centre for ice cream, and to change money. We went back to the camp ground and sweated for a bit, before meeting up with the group to go food shopping for our adventure into the Sudanese desert. The food Souq was great, we managed to get so much for the money we were given and unlike Ethiopia the food actually looked decent.
The food market just had fruit and vegetables of all kinds strewn out over tables with the shop owner sitting on the table presiding over his wares.Meat hung from hooks in the sun and men took fish out of barrels and hit them over the heads to kill them when people wanted to buy them. All in all, the whole thing was a very fun, very smelly experience.
We got back to camp and put the food away, then I took Siobhan to Omdurman Souq, which we got totally lost in.Which was fun.We walked around for ages before finding a cab, which was a crazy mini bus with blue neon lights inside, and going to a nice diner for dinner, I had veal and Siobhan had steak, I do love Khartoum. We got back at about 11pm and went to bed in our hot tent.
