Day 2 - No Shower
I've been away from home for 100 days today!
We left Khartoum at about 8am and drove around in circles for a while, trying to get out of the big, dusty city.We headed out into the big flat desert and arrive at our first site, Na'qa at about 12pm, where we had lunch. There were a few locals milling around with their camels and it was as David would say "b****** hot".We went into the temple at about 1pm, the single hottest part of the day in Sudan, and in my long sleeved Sudanese dress, I started to feel a little faint.
I was not in the temple for very long, it was heavily ruined and it was unbelievably hot.The temple had an avenue of rams in the sphinx position leading up to it and was built in the Egyptian style. It must have looked lovey when it was first built.
We drove away from Na'qa temple for about 1km into the desert and arrived at the great temple of Muswarrat. This temple was built by the Nubians to imitate Karnak, unfortunately, it too is also in absolute ruins and it was difficult for most of them to get an idea as to what they were looking at.
There was another small temple at the site, which had been almost completely restored, I think they found that quite enjoyable. The reliefs were still quite vivid and it was easy for me to explain what was going on in the depictions.
We drove about 200m away from the temple and set up camp in the middle of the desert. We cooked dinner and then went to sleep.Guy and I decided to sleep outside.I pulled out a rug and put my sleeping mat on that and feel asleep looking up at the stars in the middle of the desert.I woke up during the night, with quite a start, alone in the dark in the middle of the desert, wondering, "What the hell am I doing?"
