I love little towns like this in the middle of no where. I really don't understand people who say, What are we supposed to do here for two days? Relax. Chill out. Appreciate the quiet life. Breathe the fresh air.
That's pretty much what Kate, Gen, Moy, Andy and I did today. We started off our day with breakfast cooked by a very enthusiastic Nikolai, we had traditional Russian pancakes. We then all trooped down to the tourist information to attempt to organize a boat trip. It took about an hour to get out of them that their boat was now broken and we couldn't go. I don't think anyone was really that upset about it.
We all went for a random hike up the road and then up a random hill. I initially said, Not a chance in hell, to climbing the huge tree covered hill….but as usual Moy peer pressured me into getting at least half way up the hill.
There were too many trees to see anything, we climbed down and ventured a little further up the road, but eventually took a group vote to go and have lunch. On the way to lunch, we found a young Russian girl by the name of Lucy hawking boat trips. Figures. So we booked onto the 4pm trip. Yay for dumb luck.
We had lunch and a quick look through some small markets, in which the only produce being sold were tacky souvenirs and dried fish. We got yelled at by the people selling the dried fish for taking photos.
We had basically run out of things to occupy ourselves with by this time, so we grabbed some beers and went and sat on the shore of the lake until it was time to leave for the boat trip. What do you know? The local bottle shop had Efes, so Efes is what we drank. I love Russia.
Lucy kept coming down to the beach way too early and trying to drag us off to the boat. She eventually succeeded in moving the drunken Aussies off the beach and over to the boat. However, we then had to wait for the captain, who kept us waiting another half hour. While we were waiting Lucy kept us all amused by trying to guess our ages, she told Gen she looked like she was eleven and Britney Spears and then proceeded to pick Gen up. She told Moy he looked like Ricky Martin….Moy was not amused. Andy looked like Robert Deneiro, Kate looked twenty five and like Madonna. She said I was twenty five and looked like Angelina Jolie, yep that girl gets all Tucan's business from now on!
We got on the boat and I sat on the front for a while, however it eventually became too cold and I had to go up the back. It was a pretty uneventful boat trip, which only went for about an hour. The most interesting part of the trip, was seeing an old communist steam engine on the circum Baikal railway.
We got back to Listvyanka and went to back to the hotel, where I immediately went up to my room and fell asleep doing paper work.
