We left our beach camp this morning at about 9am, some people decided to go in for a morning dip in the Atlantic, I wasn't one of them this time. It was really cold and I had no intention of getting any colder, or saltier for that matter.
We packed up the truck and headed to Cape Cross to visit the seal colony, it was birthing season, so just about every female seal had a newly born pup with her. Many of them were dead as a result of abandonment, being trampled or just being killed by the males. We actually saw one large male throwing a pup around, it was really brutal. We spent a lot of time with the expectant mothers hoping they would pop while we were there. Having been to the seal colony before I went for a walk to see if anything else was around.
I found a monument which consisted of two metal crosses, I had no idea what it was about as it was all in Afrikaans. There was a wall over-looking the desert, which climbed up onto and looked out into the vast nothing in front of me. George came up and asked how it was going, I'm ok mate, I said. Probably would have thought I was a nutter if I had told him I was enjoying staring into the void.
We spent a lot of time waiting around for one particular seal to give birth, and Mugo was getting a bit impatient to be on our way, so we had to leave her with out and audience and keep on truckin into Swakopmund….the adventure capital of Namibia. Once there we unpacked the truck and got settled before heading across the road to the adventure place to see what was on offer. The only thing I wanted to do was go sky diving again.
I waited around until everyone had put their names down for what they wanted and went up to the ladies and asked if I could go sky diving. They gave me a really good deal being crew, so second jump takes place tomorrow. I'm so excited and again, I'm not scared at all.
I spent the rest of the day wandering around the town trying to get my bearings and failing as I was in a completely different place to last time. I wanted to get dye to do my hair, but I settled for having it done at the hair dressers, which was a real treat, even if Ash had to get the black stains off my forehead using water and cigarette ash. I'll have to remember that trick I think. George and I went out for dinner at a place called Ocean Basket and had amazing fish and chips. I'd been in here before, so this helped jog my memory a bit. After dinner I went back to the room for a quiet night, for the first time in a long time I watched a movie on my laptop.
