We left Rainbow camp early today and headed to the town of Rhundu, basically on the border with Angola. I had stopped here with the Dragomaniacs and at the time, thought who the hell visits a place like this? Again, I had the same thought, thinking to myself that I couldn't believe I was back here.
I had much more purpose to my visit this time, on my last visit to Rhundu, I remember thinking, what the hell am I supposed to do here for an hour and a half. This time, I was tasked with getting a SIM card and internet put on mine and Georges phones. This took me the best part of an hour to achieve, even though I had gotten a cab to the phone shop. Oh well, TIA. I got a cab back to the truck and then went about my frantic mission to get new shoes. I literally grabbed the first pair I saw, a pair of red gym shoes with D&G on the side of them, don't think they are real D&G somehow.
I hurried back to the truck and then we headed to Grashoek, the little village of the San Bushmen. I couldn't believe we actually set up our bush camp under the same tree as had with Dragoman, I even recognized some of the kids. The group went on the village walk, I elected not to go, as I had been before. My experience with this walk was during a fierce thunderstorm, remember chasing a villager in a lion cloth, through the bush, thinking I might get hit by lightning or deafened by thunder and laughing all the while. I was in no hurry to have an experience that was any less than that, so I stayed behind to help cook dinner.
After dinner we went to the incredible small pub nearby, which was literally no more than a mud hut with beer in it. It got very crowded with locals, and there was no personal space, so I went outside and had a look at the incredible stars. I don't think I'll ever get sick of looking at the stars in this country. I walked back to camp and sat around playing games around the camp fire for a while before heading off to bed.
