We arrived in Queenstown a few days ago and love it. There is so much to do and see. It's a great place for adrenalin junkies which we are not (yet). On the afternoon we arrived we headed up to Bob's Peak which gives you a great view over Queenstown and it's huge lake. At the top of the peak you can paraglide, bungy, swing and luge. The place was heaving with people doing all four activities.
We then took a walk into town and headed into the NZone office and after what seemed likes ages of "Do we don't we" booked our 15,000ft tandem skydives for the following afternoon (weather permitting), after this we headed for a beer as I (Lucy) was already starting to feel the effects of what was to come.
Saturday morning came round all too quickly. We headed out to the botanical gardens and took a little drive along the lake to take my mind off that afternoon.
12.30pm was soon upon us and we walked to the NZone office where we were met by 12 other very nervous faces and some great staff that tried their best ease any nerves that people had. We where picked up and taken to the drop zone. By this time I felt sick and Phil looked calm and relaxed. It took what seemed an age for our names to be called, we headed through the back and got ready. We met our instructors and camera men. Then it was time to make the jump. Walking towards the plane my heart was in my very dry mouth, Phil still looked calm and relaxed and the Japanese girl who was with us did nothing but laugh. The plane started it's incline to 16,200ft above sea level (which is 15,000ft above ground level). The scenery from the plane was amazing, you could see snow on the peaks, the sky was blue and there was hardly any cloud.
When we reached 16,200ft the door opened and it was time. Phil went first. He and his instructor where on the ground in 8 minutes. The Japanese girl was next, she screamed from the moment the door opened to the moment she hit the ground, alive of course. Then it was my turn... Oh my god. The freefall was amazing. When the shute went up we spent 6 minutes gliding. By this time we where at about 9,000ft, the view from up there is incredibable so you'll have to look at the pictures.
Phil was already on the ground when I landed and we both had stupid grins on our faces. It was such a big achievement. Would we do it again? Hell yeah.
We will soon be off to Millford Sound which we have been told is beautiful so I am sure that we will take more photos of lakes and mountains.
