Get up and head to the flour power bakery for breakfast. A great wee cafe tucked away off the main 3 streets. I grab French toast amd has been awhile (LT).
Mo books her bus back to Chiang Mai for 5pm tomorrow. We make the most of the afternoon as it will be carnage tonight.
We make the most of the afternoon and hire a taxi. Mo is not confident on a moped and I'm not confident having a passenger after falling off with one the last time I was here. Works out a similar cost and we plan to be at the sunset bar for 7pm. We first head to the Tai Pai hot springs.
We take a walk to the top passing man made pools with stepping stones large enough to sunbathe on. At the top there are hot springs. 80 degree water bubbling with steam rising off the surface. A sign reads "no boil egg". We walk back down and enter one of the man made pools. The water is warm but full of algae. I step out with a leech. We enter the stream running from the top. The sign says 32 degrees but it feels like a hot bath. Today is 32 degrees in Pai. With the combination of water and air temperature you can only sit in for so long. I feel very clean afterwards from the fresh running mineral water. We go down to the cafe for a cooling drink. The taxi then takes us to Mor Paeng waterfalls. Not particularly impressive, but we climb up them and enjoy the view. We watch people juggling, spinning canvas plates and balls on strings. Modern hippies that have arrived here 10 years too late. There is a natural drop into the water but our time has evaporated and we head back to the taxi. The rain comes and I had been watching the dark cloud head towards Pai. We get ready and negotiate a bike to the sunset bar. A hundred bhat and far enough away to make walking home a challenge.
We order from the limited menu and sit near the pool table. The music is great. Funky remixes from Deelite to Shirley Bassey and suits the hippy atmosphere. The bar overlooks a paddy field and I make sure I'm coated head to toe in Deet as it's humid here with no fans. We speak to 3 english lads on mopeds who are lost and heading to a hostel near the piranha fishing park. They are debating taking their bags to the hostel or settling in here for the night. I drop my 2 cents in and they decide to find the hostel first. We get a bucket of rum and enjoy the atmosphere.
The 3 lads return - Danny, Zead, Olly. We sit talking for awhile before they head into town. No idea what they're looking for as this is the perfect place to be. The vibe is great, people lying in hammocks, others playing pool, blissful beats. We move away from the front up to the hill at the back. A great view down on the bar and no one is sitting there. A few people eventually turn up. The lads who were waiting for the bus to Pai the other day, a Thai lad called Jimbo and his norwegian pal. We sit chatting and enjoy the atmosphere at what seems the top of the world. The Norwegian and his friend go looking for food. We say goodbye as they head off on their journey. Before I sit here all night and still have the energy, we make the journey home. Amusing walking along the road. Mo is hungry and stops off at a lone vendor selling omelettes and rice. Surprisingly tasty. I sit up for awhile back at the room before getting a great nights sleep.
