Too early for the Korean experience we find a bar whilst watching the never ending stream of beggars. Arriving at the North Korean restaurant, it is packed so looks like we made it on time.
We see 2 other westerners who look more like CIA operatives, but mainly Japanese and Koreans. Looking at the menu, some odd dishes including - roast salmon jaw, whole turtle in chicken broth, roast cows tongue, cuttlefish, roast dog, eel, seacumber and steamed bread. We play it safe and I go for roast quall, with Craig going for a salmon dish.
Phil Collins can be heard in the background. Slightly out of place like a vegetarian at a donar kebab award ceremony. We get a selection of pickled cabbage, boiled peanuts and other pickled vegetables to go with our mains.
There are signs everywhere warning to take no photos and after being caught once, Craig helps to block the view so that I can obviously continue filming.
The lights dim and the strange show begins. All the entertainers are woman, with tattooed smiles locked in place. A group of girls start dancing, handing bunches of flowers to various members of the audience. Followed by an opera singer. The colourful display proceeds onto 4 drummers banging in unison. A talented violinist plays when 2 old Korean men run on stage smiling very enthusiastically and hand back their bunch of flowers. Girls in white dresses start dancing to an almost western pop sound. Like a disturbing Disney production we watch bemused.
A pink dressed lady starts singing followed by blue dressed keyboarder, accordion and violinist who find their swiss musical roots. The rainbow continues with pink coloured cheesy pop.
An unusual string instrument is plucked by miss yellow.
More pop singers, 6 girls in red belting out another unknown tune. My mind is ablaze in this kaleidescope of colour and western focus. Like a warped Gilbert and Sullivan production my eyes are glued. A girl dances with a pot and rings on her head spinning faster and faster. The crowd are going wild for this forced production.
A band reminiscent of the Beatles belt out Phantom of the Opera, with drummer, guitarists and a violinist, all smiling of course.
They then play Cliff Richards Celebration like only a Communist variation of the Shadows can.
2 guys get pulled up on stage and are sprayed with party poppers and foam to the sound of Happy Birthday. My personal favourite is when John Lennon's Imagine is played. Bloody priceless. We speak to an older Japanese man next to us who both in equal measures is curious and perplexed. He mentions that living closer to NK he wanted to see a glimpse of a country that is shrouded in mystery. There are well placed photoshoots at the end to continue the crafted illusion of happiness. Not a cheap place to go and the money that is donated to NK hopefully goes to getting Kim Jong a better barber.
To finish off the night we head to street 51 which is the other main area for a night out. Whilst listening to Johnny be good, it is still too early and head to the riverside to find the band Unity. The barmaid hands us surveys and I'm guessing we are the only humans to fill them in. Her excitement with our suggestions is staggering. Unity's soulful voice comes to a close and we talk to the band for awhile before heading back to street 51. Mainly go go bars but we find a place that at the very minimum you can play the girls for drinks. The gamer in me rises to the challenge getting beaten a little too frequently at connect 4. Ego bruised we finish the night at a local nightclub playing western house tunes.
