Get up and go to a local restaurant so Craig could try the breakfast. Noodles dont appeal so stick to a coffee. Turns out to be a glass of ice cubes with condensed milk at the bottom. The duck noodles he has are pretty good in between the bones. We jump in a tuk tuk who takes us out to the killing fields. The locals have mixed opinions on this as there were hundreds of fields, but it is linked to S-21 so it is worth at least seeing. You get a free audio tape to walk round which is narrated by one of the survivors who paints a vivid image. Pieces of bone and clothing are scattered around. I find some shade and listen to the saddening stories. The people were told they were being relocated but the truth was it was their final resting place. Propaganda music blasted out during the day and it was played at night to cover up the executions. Possibly 1 in 5 Cambodians were slaughtered. There is a Stoupa in the middle filled with skulls and the weapons used. On the outside it is decorated with Garudas (winged guardians) and their enemy Nagas (snakes that lead the way to heaven). The snakes always have an odd number of arms as this is good luck in Hindu. When both creatures are seen it means peace. Hopefully the souls taken by the brutal regime find some peace.
Enough sightseeing, our short time as been filled with the cities main sutes. We take Florentines advise and check out a posh hotel with a swimming pool next to the river. For $7 we can use the facilities. Sitting on a lounger with some cooling ice cream which is added to my list of little things (LT)
Grab a beer in time for happy hour at the hostel. For 2 grubby backpackers the pool was like a sheepwash so feel clean and relaxed.
