The journey to Phnom Penh via Hong Kong was ok - Cathay Pacific's Premium Economy was ok but not as good as Virgin or Qantas. We were late leaving Hong Kong (not Cathay's fault) and - for me - it seemed to make the journey longer than it needed to be.
On arrival in Phnom Penh we navigated the visa and customs bureaucracy -$US30 per person. We were met by our driver Sam the Man, who has clearly spent too long with Australians. His business card describes him as Driver and Good Bloke. Traffic is chock-a-block and busier than Bourke Street!
The Blue Lime Hotel is fantastic. The building would be a few decades old but has been tastefully decorated. Our room is lovely and has the star attraction of a private pool. Guess what we did first? After cooling down we caught a tuk-tuk to the Foreign Correspondents' Club for lunch. Great view across to the junction of the Mekong and Tonle Rivers.
After eating we headed along the river and turned into a fresh food market - Pshar Kandal. Tiredness got the better of us so after some emergency DVD purchases, we caught a tuk-tuk back to the Blue Lime.
A short nap then it was time to search out Friends restaurant. This place was established to provide training for street kids in aspects of the growing hospitality industry. We ordered four tapas that were all very flavoursome; far too much food. The total bill was just under $US40.
We walked home past the absurdly lit Royal Palace. An early night to regulate the sleeping is in order.
