We had another long drive again today passing through Izmir where we later heard there had been a bombing by Turkish rebels but we hadn't seen anything. We arrived in the holiday town of Kusadasi and spend 2 nights. Kusadasi was a pleasant enough place to stary at this time of year with the weather still warm and not too many holidaymakers. Although a package holiday destination it is still very much a working town with evidence of the original bazaar still in existance. There was a new esplanade that ran the whole way down the promenade and through the harbour which was a nice stroll when the sun wasn't too hot. We are averaging about 33 degrees now each day with the sun still strong around lunch time.
Peter walked out to the old fortress and took some pictures whilst I sat on the harbour wall in the shade!
We drove out of Kusadasi for another cultural visit, this time to Ephesus and commented on the three large cruise ships that had docked overnight. We soon realised that probably all the passengers off the 3 ships were visiting Ephesus that morning it was very, very busy. It didn't help matters when we realised we had gone in at the wrong gate and hundreds of people were coming down the hill and we were walking up it!!
The best preserved classical city in the Eastern Mediterranean is the place to get a feel for what life was like in Roman times. There is much to see at Ephesus but we didn't have a guide although we latched on to a few of the cruise groups from time to time. If you are a history buff you could easily spend a full day here but we were just there for the morning and found it fascinating but we had a long drive ahead of us and needed to set off.
