We crossed into Turkey which was better organised than some of the border crossings so far. First we had to get motor insurance whichw as US65 and US20 for our Visas.
We headed for Gallipoli a slender peninsular on the Dardanelle straits. Many fleets have tried to force their way up these straits including the Allied Forces in World War I and failed. Most of the peninsular is a National Park housing 34 war cemetaries and battle fields, the main one being Anzac Cove where most of the Australian and New Zealander Army Corp (ANZAC) lost their lives. The campaign in total resulted in the loss of more than half a million men.
We have visited the National War Memorial in Canberra, Australia which was fascinating and were keen to visit Gallipoli. It was a very moving experience. The cemetaries are meticulously maintaned and housed in beautiful gardens, many looking out to sea. On Anzac Memorial Day in 2005 more than 20,000 people came to mark the 90th anniversary of the Gallipoli landings.
After that we took a ferry to cross the peninsular at Canakkale and camped in the grounds of a small hotel which had a small puppy on a chain in the yard that cried and howled most of the night!
Next morning we visited Troy and the first sight you see as you approach the ruins is a huge replica of the wooden trojan horse, a story that is more fairytale than fact.
Troy is a tricky site to understand as excavations have revealed nine ancient cities built one on top of the other dating back to 3000 BC but nevertheless we spentt a few hours exploring the ancient site.
The driving is pretty heavy going now as the condition of the roads is very poor and the distances are quite long. We were ready for a couple of days R&R and found a nice site in a small town named Bergama where we spent a couple of nights. They too had a puppy which used to sit at the side of us each day and play. One morning we came out of the camper and he came scampering up to greet us dragging a toy only it turned out not the be a toy it was a dead kitten!! He obviously hadn't killed it but found it somewhere and thought it was a game. We called the night watchmen to take it away and if it wasn't so sad for the kitten it would have been a funy sight watching the guy hold on to the kitten's tail and the dog jumping up to grab its leg!!!!
