We crossed the border into Rwanda quite easily and quickly noticed that the scenery was noticably different from that of Uganda in that instead of banana plantations it was now tea and coffee plantations with absolutely lush stunning scenery. We made our way to Kigali the capital and booked into Hotel des Mille Collines made famous from the film Hotel Rwanda which tells the harrowing story of the Genocide which took place in Rwanda in 1994.
The Rwandan army and Interhamwe death squad raged all over the country killing, looting and burning and road blocks were set up in every town and city. Every day thousands of Tutsi tribe and any Hutu tribe suspected of sympathising with them were viciously butchered on the sport.
We visited the Kigali Memorial Centre which steadily built up the background to the genocide. As the visit progresses it becomes more powerful as you are confronted with the crimes which took place here. The sections on the cold and calculated planning of the genocide and its bloody executions are particularly disturbing and include moving testimony from survivors.
