Zanzibar!!! So we caught a direct flight from Arusha, Tanzania to Stone Town, Zanzibar. When we arrived, half the groups luggage was lost including ours. Go figure they just didn't put the bags on! Luckily we managed to get our bags that evening so we could get our togs out.
We spent 2 nights in Stone Town which is a world heritage site. It has amazing stone architecture and small alleyways reminiscent of its arab history. Stone used to be the last stop for the slaves along the slave route before being sent overseas to places like the americas etc. We spent our days walking through the streets, checking out the little shops and markets. We visited the old stone fort and the house of wonders (basically a museum). One evening we went to the local food market to get dinner - cheap seafood on a stick, samosas and chocolate and banana pancakes!
We then made our way to the north of the island. On the way we did a spice farm tour which was very interesting - we got to try the different spices and local fruits! The beaches in the north were absolutely beautiful - Cath and I were dying for some beach time! We got some henna tattoos and drank lots of cocktails!!! Many a boozed night! We tried to go snorkelling on the reef one day but the weather wasn't so great - the swell was very big and we were in a crappy dhow with a very small motor. Luckily Cath made the call for us to turn back as we were seriously worried about the dhow tipping in the ocean.
On our last evening in Zanzibar we had a hat party and games night. We all had to wear a hat we'd bought during the trip! Brenda and Butch organised team challenges - including nile rafting (on the sun beds), navigating across tanzania and the all group relay (balancing stuff on our heads, dipping in the ocean and chugging down some beer! ) Very pissed by the end! Heaps of fun!
We caught the ferry back to Dar es Salaam - most of us were quite ill, combo of a hangover and rocking boat (go the phenergan).
Zanzibar was totally awesome and i would love to go back there! Totally recommend it to everyone! Love Pen
