We got up and jumped on a tuk tuk to the airport. Our first flight was at 10.30am to Ho Chi Minh, the next was at 2pm to Phu Quoc. We'd decided to spend our last week on the beach, and Phu Quoc seemed to make sense as it was close to Ho Chi Minh for our return to the UK.
Considering it was a travelling day, things all went pretty well. We had a couple of minor issues, but nothing compared to usual. We had to convince the check in guy to take our card details from a piece of paper, and then Paul had to convince security that he wasn't a druggy, and did in fact have diabetes!! We hadn't left long between the flights, so we had to literally run from one to the other! But the day went well, an we landed in Phu Quoc around 3pm.
We hadn't booked anywhere so jumped in a taxi to the beach. We had no idea where to go, so just started walking. We asked in a dive shop where we should go, and they sent us in the right direction.
The first few places said they were full and we wondered for the first time if we should of pre booked! There was a sign to a guest house, that said it was 20m away! That was a bit confusing, as 20m would be in the sea! We ignored it and kept looking. Everywhere said they were full, so we went back to the one with the sign. It was literally a wooden hut on stilts above the sea. It looked really nicely done and we decided to go for it! Our only real hesitation was bugs, but so far, we've only had one cockroach!!
We didn't do too much the first evening, just had dinner at the hotel next door and went for a look around the night market. It didn't seem like there was an awful lot around, so we took a drink back to our room.
We didn't get the best nights sleep as we kept thinking we could hear things. We're pretty sure it was all in our heads as every time we looked, there was nothing there!!
The next day, we thought we'd go into town and buy some supplies. We've got a fridge so we were after some drinks and picky bits. We walked for miles to a mini mart that we'd seen on the map, and when we got there, it sold hardly any food!! It was mostly clothes and souvenirs! We couldn't believe it! At least we got to see the place! It just felt a bit hot to be going so far by foot.
It looked like we could go a different way back so we set off that way. We then found that the bridge was closed, so we couldn't go that way after all! We guessed that the person who operates it was on holiday, so it was closed for the week!!!
There seemed to be a serious lack of bars and restaurants, and we were struggling to get a drink, nether mind food!!
We walked back the way we came, and finally saw a restaurant that looked half decent, and stopped for a massive burger! That felt much better, and we carried on back to the hotel.
The day was pretty much gone, so we had a snooze and went out for dinner. We walked the other way, and it was much more touristy. We ate dinner on the beach, which was really lovely! On our way back, we asked in a hotel how much a room was, as we weren't sure how much sleep we'd get where we were staying! It was affordable and nice enough. It was also concrete and on the first floor, so the chances of bugs was slim. We decided we'd see how we slept overnight and then decide in the morning.
We actually slept really well. We put a mosquito net up and tucked it under the mattress for extra protection! It seemed to do the trick, so we're going to stay put!
We've had a lazy day today, a late breakfast on the beach, some lying down, some lunch and some more lying down! It's not been very sunny today, but that doesn't really spoil anything!!
It's quite a chilled place for Vietnam. We were half expecting to be hassled all the time and for the place to be overdeveloped, but its not like that at all!
Hopefully, we'll have a nice chilled week before returning to the UK!
