Day 29. After breakfast at Timber Creek we went fishing at our favourite spot under the bridge, then on the road east towards Katherine about 270 km. Stopped for a walk into the top part of the Gregory National Park down to the old crossing over the mighty Victoria River, what a stunning sight the reflections in the waterholes of the red mesa escarpment behind. Chatted with the local ranger, a friendly aboriginal man called Stuart. He filled us in on a rather unusual aboriginal elder we had seen driving about Timber Creek and the Victoria Highway in a small old 4WD with his dog, passed him twice again on the Victoria Highway near Katherine. Apparently he is called Duncan Beryl who is out looking for a game of cards, carrying his own firewood! Finally arrived in Katherine and met our friends for lunch, their shockies won't arrive for 5 days so they are trapped in a nice shady van park in Katherine. We checked out Katherine, nice green town, but the walk through the Katherine Hotel at 2pm on Friday after pension day was wild. Decided to shop and get outa there to the Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge campsite. Found a great package of 2 nights in a platform tent with comfy beds, sheets, towels, dinner, breakfast, a free drink, pool and a live country singer! Tomorrow we are going on a cruise.
