Day 32. Cooked our breakfast of oats and honey at the Bitter Springs campsite, then short drive into Mataranka to Elsey National Park. Looks like a rainforest here with its giant paperbarks and Livingstona palms along the Roper River which has a permanent flow into the Gulf of Carpenteria from springs. The old Mataranka Homestead circa 1916 has been turned into a lovely garden, cafe and hot springs leading into the National Park. Onto the site of the old Elsey Homestead and cemetery where the novel 'We of the Never Never' was based. All the old characters buried here. Then onto the Stuart Highway going south to Larrimah for lunch. Checked out the museum showing the WW2 photos and relics of the old Gorrie aerodrome and the railway. Further south we stopped for the night at the old Daly Waters pub and had a fabulous night of country entertainment and dinner of steak and barra. Tomorrow we turn east onto the Carpenteria Highway to Boorooloola and the wild Gulf country.
