Day 33. Up early at the Daly Waters Outback Pub and onto the Carpenteria Highway heading east to the Gulf. First we checked out the old WW2 airstrip and hangar at Daly Waters. During the war it was Australia's last line of defence against the Japanese and saw many Hudson bombers and spitfires, even General MacArthur paid a visit. Over 400 km today bitumen mainly single lane and reached 34 degrees. Stopped lunch of toasted sandwiches at Cape Crawford Roadhouse, don't know why it's called a Cape, as over 150 km from the Gulf! Then a short stop and walk through one of the many Lost City rock formations, this one called Caranbirini Conservation Reserve, just like a mini Bungles with sandstone spires and gorges. Arrived into Borroloola in the heat of the mid afternoon, alas no beer no pub! What a dodgy hellhole of a town! 50 km further to King Ash Bay where we will stay the next 3 nights and do some barra fishing. May be outa wifi range until Mt Isa say next Sunday.
