At last, it has finally arrived. We're were getting really worried there for a minute, thinking that we could be without it for quite some time. But in Jol we trust, and Spurs have finally got their first win in this seasons English Premiership. Oh yes, we also got our passports which arrived into Hue without any trouble and we now have our Visas ready for China.
The sleeper train from Hanoi was quite comfortable. We shared our cabin with two men from France. They're travelling around Vietnam on hols but the stories they told of their trips around Africa & Asia, to former French Colonies like Senegal, Tunisia, Algeria, etc, were fascinating and made us realise that there is so much of this world to see, if only we could travel for the rest of our lives....
Arrived into Hue 3 hours late due to track problems (caused by flooding here last week) and basically just wondered around the town the first day. It's a smaller and more relaxed city to Hanoi, thank god. Next day we did the city tour which took in ancient Royal tombs of the rulers of the Nguyen dynasty. As Patche, the ever wise dog from home, informed us these tombs were alot more interesting than the Citadel in the city which has been destroyed by sucessive wars. All that basically remains of the Citadel is thousand of tourists walking around imagining what it would have looked like.
Next day we went on a DMZ Tour. This tour took in all the major sights around the old Demilitarised Zone which once seperated North Vietnam from South Vietnam and was a major friction point during the American War. The highlight was definitely the tour around the Vinh Moc tunnels. These tunnels housed hundreds of people during the American War and leave a long impression in your mind about the madness of war and the suffering that orinary people must have gone through. Back to town and back to watching more soccer and laughing at Arsenal getting kicked off the pitch again at Blackburn; some things never change or fail to amuse me!
This morning we got a short (4 hour) bus ride to Hoi An, a small town which is absolutely full of tailors. The sun is shining and the temperature is definitely up on what we've been used to over the last few weeks. Off we go now to read our books over a nice cold, and cheap, beer. Till next time....
