After a 21 hour journey from Ko Phangan we have finally arrived into Kanchanaburi, or as most people will know it as the town beside the bridge over the River Kwai. But first there is the islands to tell all about.
We left Ko Phi Phi via another very rocky ferry ride, so rough in fact that i swore that i wouldn't take another ferry again. Unfortunately for me, the only way for us to get to Ko Samui, our destination that day, was to bus it across to Surat Thani and get another ferry from there. Thankfully this ferry was alot larger and the ride was smooth and comfortable. We checked into our accommodation on Chaweng Beach and proceeded to walk up and down, and then up and down again, the main street looking at all the hawker stands and saying how great it would be to have an empty backpack and the money to fill it. We watched a bit of the Connaught Football Final but the reception was rubbish so we left the few Limerick men who were eagerly awaiting the Munster Hurling Final to it.
We left Ko Samui and caught a short ferry ride to Ko Phangan and settled ourselves into our beach bungalow called Dolphins. It was basic, a hammock outside, a bed with a mosquito net over, a cold shower and a toilet with a bucket of water to use as a flush. But i loved it, lying all day in the hammock reading my book, John Simpson's "News From No Mans Land", and then we'd head down to the beach for a swim in the afternoon. This was our holiday within our holiday and we proceeded to do absolutely nothing for the next 3 days.
Finally yesterday we said our goodbyes and caught a taxi to the ferry terminal at 10am. The ferry was to bring us back to Surat Thani to meet our bus destined for Bangkok. We got onto the bus which was an overnight bus with arrival into Bangkok at 5am. Overnight buses are never that comfortable so we did get a few hours sleep but then that bus came to a standstill at 4am, we had arrived into Bangkok an hour early. We were greeted by numerous taxi and tuk tuk drivers offering us lifts to here, there and everywhere. Luckily we knew the station we had to get to to get our bus to Kanchanaburi and after numerous negotations in which we said no several times as they quoted crazy figures we finally got a tuk tuk to our station and arrived just in time as a bus to Kanchanaburi was leaving. On we hopped and 3 hours later we arrived. We are now waiting to check into our accommodation (hence the long blog) and get some badly needed sleep. To sleep we now gooooo...........
