And so we have arrived into another Asian country, our 7th so far. Cambodia is by far the poorest we have yet visited.
The bus journey from Saigon was without great incident. Coming up to the border the bus drivers assistant tried to charge us US$25 for the Cambodian visa but we knew in advance that it only cost US$20 so we said that we would do it ourselves which he didn't feel happy. Stating that the bus would only wait 20 minutes for us he left us to it. In all honesty it was no hassle at all. The biggest problem was getting our exit stamp from the Vietnamese side but after fighting our way through the crowds and standing firm as some Vietnamese people tried to skip the line (queues don't exist in Vietnam) we eventually got through, got our visa on the Cambodian side and back onto the bus.
Arrived into Phnom Penh and the first impression that hit us was the dirt of the city, there's rubbish everywhere. Saying this, we still quite like this city. Yesterday we just spent the day wandering around the city and enjoying the happy hours in the bars by the river. Today we visiting the Tuol Sleng Museum which was used by the Khmer Rouge as a prison between the years 1975 abd 1978. More than 17,000 people were detained and tortured at this prison were later taken to the extermination camp at Choeung Ek (which we would visit that afternoon) and many of their photos are on display throughout the museum. Later this afternoon we went to the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek where these men, women and children were exterminated. It was a truely depressing experience and the sheer horror that these people must have gone through is unimaginable and this only happen less that 30 year ago!
Tomorrow we depart and venture deeper into Cambodia to Siem Reap where the famous Temples of Angkor awaits us. We have really enjoyed Phnom Penh but time is at a premiun and we must move on to see as much as possible before our flight from Bangkok on the 10th.
