Long Way To NZ
Started our 2 week trip in Italy on 1st April in Milan. We were only planning to spend a week at the most in Italy because of the expense of the place but we liked it too much. Arrived late in Milan so spent out on a budget hotel because the only hostel in the city is quite far out. Made the effort to get there for the second night - wished we hadn't, it was a s***-hole. Met a Southampton supporter though so enjoyed bragging about Pompeys spot in the premiership!
There are places in Milan that are really worth a visit - mainly the area where the Duomo is. It is a massive building made of pink limestone with many detailed carved spires. But the two nights in Milan was plenty.
But three nights in Rome was not enough, the place is incredible. Just wandering around the Colosseum, Forums, Trevi Fountain and all the cobbled streets is an unforgetable experience. It was cultural week so all these places were free but we were drowned in a sea of yellow hatted school kids.
The stories of Italian food excited me so the first thing I did was splash out 8euro on a lasagne. It was s***e! Like one of those 99p ones you get from ASDA! And it was stone cold - i took it back and he apologised and stuck it back in the microwave!
Sorrento was our next stop staying in a green cabin at a campsite. Great place and we made day trips to Pompeii the island of Capri! We met an Aussie couple (Steve and Ethanaya) who have been working in London for 6years and are on their way home to Sydney. They left in Ocober and aim to get home my Christmas. So many stories from their travels to hear.
On the way up to Florence we climbed to the crater of Vesuvius. Wow what a view and the volcano is steaming - letting us all know that it is still sctive!
Florence was another fantastic city - a city that served me intestines and Hannah b******s. We didn't know what we were eating at the time but they just looked so good from a kiosk in the middle of a market that sold chickens complete with heads! We met Vivian (J-Lo lookalike from Guatemala) in our hostel and she joined us to our last stop in Italy, Venice.
We stayed in another campsite which was a distance out of town and right under the flight path. But Venice is incredible, so different to anywhere we have been so far! It does stink in places though. We tryed to get ourselves a traditional trip on a Gondola but they were all determined to rip us off.
We left Italy and Vivian on 13th April and made our way to Slovenia.
