Myall Lakes, South West Rocks and Arakoon
November 27th - 30th
Picked up our Camperman campervan and started the drive north to Cairns for the next 3 weeks of our Aussie trip. Very thankful that we paid a bit more cash for a bit more space as I think we'd have killed each other otherwise! Looking at most of the other campervans on the road (Wicked, Jucy and Autobahn) they all looked absolutely tiny and you clearly couldn't even stand up in them - unlucky fellow drivers.
The drive out of Sydney was surprisingly stress-free and we soon got to Myall Lakes, our first stop after taking a mini ferry over to a place called Bombah Point. This was the Great Lakes area and a really peaceful place. Spent a couple of nights here and managed to get in a bit of swimming and walking / roadkill photography. Also saw a few funnelweb spiders in the loos and showers - arrrrrrggghhhhh.
Loads of Aussies were blatantly ignoring the 'total fire ban' in place (pyromaniacs) and were lighting barbies left, right and centre. Clearly unable to cope without their barbecued meat fix.
Next stop up the coast was at a tiny little place called South West Rocks via Port McQuarie. We camped at Arakoon and arrived on a beautiful evening meaning Sarah headed straight for a swim in the sea. The campsite was also home to a load of kangaroos and kookaburras who were very keen on stealing food - poor manners. Cooked our first shrimp on the public barbies with a great view of the beach.
There was a massive thunderstorm in the night meaning I woke up soaked after loads of water leaked onto our bed via the open windows. Rained pretty much all of the next day and we woke to find an entire school trip (3 bus loads) of kids swarming the campsite with teachers on microphones trying in vain to organise the little b*****s. We weren't exactly ecstatic at their arrival, but they soon left as the weather was so bad - hahahahha.
We both went for a run Baywatch style along the beach as soon as there was a break in the rain and then for a swim to cool down. Another storm in the night and woke to find the people next to us who arrives suspiciously late leaving very early. Clearly they hadn't paid for a site - absolute scum!
