Yesterday after leaving Inglewood (after not finding any gold...) we drove to the Melville Caves in the Kooyoora State Park. It was a great drive through natural bush. We even spotted a few Kangaroo's, and moved a Shingleback Lizard off the track.
We left the car and camper in the carpark, and followed the signs to the track up to the Melville Caves. It was a steep track with lots of steps...lots....so, good exercise for us! The views were great on the way up, and even better at the top where we could see for miles. It was nice and clear which was great, and warm at about 30 degrees....awesome weather! Check out the video. (you'll have to excuse my poor camera work though...hopefully I will get better as we go along...) The caves were so much cooler inside, which was welcoming after the climb there. Legend has it that Captain Melville (a bushranger) used these caves as a hide-out in the late 1800's after holding up the coaches loaded with gold on their way to Melbourne. He was captured, then was involved in a bungled escape ending in the death of a guard, and was recaptured and died of 'suicide' in the jail (by strangulation) at the age of 35. Here ends the history lesson for today!
After leaving the caves (walking the 300m back down to the carpark...after finding at the top lookout that there is another carpark only 150m from the lookout...a much easier track...naturally) we drove along the winding bush track and found a Shingleback Lizard in the middle of the road, which Paul decided to save from being run over...he wasn't so happy about being moved off the track, but at least he wouldn't be run over!! See the video (if Paul has added it correctly, we're still learning!) ....he's a cranky little fella!! (the lizard... not Paul)
We eventually found a little free camp at the Skinners Flat Reservoir, just out of Wedderburn, where we've set up camp for a few nights. It's a lovely little spot right next to the lake, with an abundance of bird life and ants galore...though they're not giving us any trouble...yet. Paul caught us a meal of large yabbies which we had for dinner last night...free camping and free food....gotta love that!
Well, not much else to report...just kicking back relaxing, listening to the the breeze through the Eucalypts, with the magpies singing to us...it's a tough life!
