Paul's World Tour
Hi everybody from Glasgow
After 11 months, travelling over 29000 miles on 21 flights through 4 continents, I have finally returned home. Its good to be home and not living out a backpack and I'm looking forward to seeing everyone again. Overall, the world tour has been a great experience and I have done some amazing things as well as meet some great people. The biggest shock being back home is the temperature!! It was over 31 degrees in Singapore and now it is close to minus figures in Scotland!!
Below are a few observations and frequently asked questions from my world tour in no particular order
Best Moments
1- Heli Hike on the Franz Joseph Glacier in South Island, New Zealand.
2- Helicopter ride over the Grand Canyon, USA.
3- Camping in a safari tent on Great Keppel Island, Australia.
4- Riding in a stretched hummer with champagne and 10 women in Las Vegas, USA.
And many more ....
Worst Moment
1- Being ill in Las Vegas the next day after being in the stretched hummer!!
Scariest Moment
1- Being in the only guests in a hostel in Fiji with some eager to please staff - it was a nice hostel but I kept thinking about the Bates motel in Psycho!
2- First time we walked home to our flat at night in Melbourne and realised we were on a very dark street in the middle of the red light district.
Things I missed most
1- Family and friends
2- M&S food
Biggest Annoyances
1- Pisshead travellers - usually English!
2- Messy people who snore in dormitories.
3- Having to carry around everything you own from clothes to corn flakes!!
Most stupid comments - (these are genuine and all were from Americans!)
1- Why do you have a British passport if you are from the country of Scotland?
2- Wow, you are Scottish - you speak perfect English!
3- You are from Scotland - I have relatives there, do you know them? NO!!!
Some Industry Awards.......
Best Airline Award
1- Singapore Airlines
2- Virgin Atlantic
Best Airport Award
1- Singapore - free internet access - sweet
2- Perth - Darron got us into the VIP lounge!
Worst Airport Award
1- BAA London Heathrow - Terminal 3 is just awful and the toilets were overflowing and disgusting!
2- Rarotonga, Cook Islands - the airport closed down at night and we had to sit around on a park bench!
Best Hostel
1- YHA's in New Zealand were excellent - especially the Wellington and Franz Joseph ones.
2- YHA in Vancouver was good too.
3- Tropic Days in Cairns
4- Safari Tents on Great Keppel Island.
Worst Hostel
1- Too many to list!!
2- Hostels in Australia and USA were not that great.
3- Fat Camel hostel in Auckland was gross.
In summary - a great experience all round. Now back to the harsh reality of having to get a job and earn some money. I have decided that the more of the world you see, the more you want to see. This definitely wont be the last of my travels!
Now that I am back in Glasgow, I am looking forward to catching up with you all soon. I have loved getting all your emails, messages and comments whilst I have been on my travels and thank you very much for all your support. Will be arranging a party in early January for my birthday and hope to make contact with most of you before then. Feel free to give me a call to say hi.
Best wishes
Paul
