Paul's World Tour
Hi everybody from Singapore!
Landing in Asia was exciting after being in Australia for so long. Our taxi driver from the airport to the hostel seemed a bit confused as to where he was going and liked reading maps while driving and straying over lanes before swerving periodically! The hostel we were staying at was right in Chinatown, which was a really cool experience.
Unable to find a McDonalds nearby, we ventured to one of the local food places called hawker markets. We were the only western people in the market and being a good 2 feet taller than the rest of the crowd we were attracting a bit of attention. The food all looked a bit strange so we followed the rule of going to the counter which had the busiest queue of locals as that is usually a good sign. It worked a treat as the food was gorgeous and turns out they had won award from the New York times food critic!! However, I'm still slightly paranoid about traces of bird flu in their chicken!
The city is a really cool place to visit. We didn't have much time but were able to get round all the main places including the botanic gardens, which house some amazing orchids. Little India was interesting and we ventured into another eating establishment frequented by the locals. I was able to pick up a tailored made suit and Egyptian cotton shirt from some back street tailor for a ridiculously low price. Finally, no trip to Singapore would be complete without going to Raffles and relaxing with a Singapore Sling cocktail in the Long Bar - very classy!
That night we got caught in the most violent thunder and lightning storm I had ever seen. Buildings above us were being struck and it sounded like huge explosions all around us while the rain was torrential. After waiting hours to see if it would ease off we eventually had to make a run for it as it was getting late and our hostel would be locking the front door. Very scary. I later found out that Singapore has the highest number of deaths caused by lightning strikes in the world!!
Anyhow, the world tour is almost complete and its time to go back home. Its currently 31 degrees here in Singapore with high humidity so I think it may be a shock when I return to Scotland in the middle of winter!!
See you soon
Paul
