So, what I didn't put in the blog from yesterday was that we were scheduled to do a 4-5 hike today with a local guide. We were to meet him at 630am this morning in Waimea, then head up to Waimea Canyon for an off the grid hike. Well, halfway home from our all day adventure on the Na'Pili coast, thinking about hauling our asses out of bed at 530am, pulling on the hiking shoes and hitting another trail did NOT sound appealing. So we cancelled. Best decision of the trip, as we slept in and could use the day to recuperate from yesterdays activity.
The morning was spent having breakfast, reading and basically doing nothing. We decided to hit the pool and got a beach side mini-cabana for the day. Enjoyed some fruity drinks, lunch and the beautiful views. Then more sleeping and reading, which we have found to be addictive.
A quick note about the chickens. Yes, the chickens. When we were picking up the rental car we noticed chickens in the car lot. A bit odd, but hey maybe they were someones pets. Nope, there are chickens everywhere on the island. Along the road, by the beach, by stores...pretty much everywhere. At Costco the sign in the outdoor snack bar read "Please don't feed the chickens or the birds". So, the chickens also figured out that Costco is a great place for a cheap lunch. I haven't seen any squished on the road, so they must be smarter than the average chickens back home.
The tradewinds in the title are the winds that are ever-present on Kauai. They are a nice breeze that keeps the heat tolerable and allows everything to be open air. Today, they seemed to have taken a break as it seems not as windy, and a bit more hot.
Tonight we walked to a local restaurant, Casa di Amici which was recommended by the water aerobics instructor. Ken had an amazing Thai lobster bisque, while I had a salad that was equally good. Service was wonderful by a young lady named Nahea'lani Peacock, who looked like she was from the mid-west, but was a native Hawaiian. The walk back was in the dark and my sense of direction went off-kilter, but Ken's was spot on, so we made it back without getting lost in the wilds of Kauai.
Last note of the day. During our hike yesterday we passed by many doing the same hike. However there were a lot of people (aka idiots) in flip flops, crappy tennis shoes and even barefoot. The worst were those who brought only one bottle of water. The hike was hot, steep, long and was recommended to bring at least 1 litre per person for just the 2 mile portion. We went through six bottles and could have used more, can't even imagine doing less and with inappropriate shoes.
Tomorrow snorkeling!!
