After sleeping for 9 hours we woke up ready for the day. We were both happy that we slept till 630am, as it is a 5 hour difference from Houston, and we were fearful that we would wake up ready for coffee at 3am. Nope! slept right on through...whewhoooo!
The plans for the day were limited as we just wanted to relax and get in the slow down mode. But the two activities on the agenda was a 2.5 mile sunrise walk from the fitness center and a luau in the evening. Since the walk started at 7am, we got moving to grab some coffee and a snack from the Concierge lounge. This is a perk that Ken gets from Hyatt for being a Diamond member, which means he sleeps in more Hyatt beds than he does his own. We can enjoy breakfast, lunch, happy hour beverages and snacks and evening deserts...all complimentary, which is a huge considering the prices of everything at the resort.
We went to the fitness center to meet up for the walk, and found out that the instructor had called in sick. So we got the directions and did the walk on our own. It wound around the edge of the water, then through a residential area with beautiful homes, a park and a beach known for it's boogie boarding called Brennecke Beach. There were some great rentals across from the beach, that we would love to rent for a week, they go for about 4k...anyone want to join?
During the walk, we also saw two seals. One was hanging off the beach at the park, while the other was about 2 feet away from two people boogie boarding. He probably wanted to grab a ride too!
The rest of the morning and early afternoon was spent relaxing, hitting the gym and enjoying the down time. We did a trip into Poipu to grab a light lunch, and to get some water shoes for surfing (tomorrow!).
The luau started at 515 in an open space overlooking the ocean. As we walked in, we were handed a small shell lei (which told the servers we were paid up and legal to be there) and a Mai Tai. We had been warned to only sit at the front tables if we wanted to be called to the stage, so we sat as far in the back as possible. Ha, ok, we actually sat in the middle but definitely far enough away to be safe.
The evening consisted of Hawaiian music, food and lots of hula'ing from many of the South Pacific islands all in a beautiful setting. The food was quite good, considering it was a buffet, with the highlight being the Kalua pork, which is where the pig is cooked in hole with coals. Ken tried the Poi and agreed with me that it tasted like paste (and not a good paste).
Tomorrow is surfing!
