I messaged the Tauranga Western Riding Club about what sort of jeans do blokes wear while in the heat of Australia, riding horses for hours on end...
They sent me in the direction of Jackson Holloway, and he sent such a gold, detailed message back, that I just had to share it.
Better to be over prepared than under prepared I guess, at least thats what I hope the outcome will be!
'Yes you will need to wear jeans and boots. Your boots must have riding heal but not Cuban. Ariat ropers are a good basic boot or similar. They need to fit your foot with sport sock. Not thin not too thick. Support but not too hot..... you need long sleeve cotton shirts half button is best as it stops too much dust getting into you and more comfy. Get large and shrink in dryer if need be. You want them to be breathable. You have to understand that this is no holiday. You will in your first couple of days completely break down with exhaustion and heat stroke. When this happens take boots socks and hat off and sit in trough. If it doesn't happen you won't be working hard enough anyway take electrolyte sachets for this issue. Jeans need to be worn over top of boots to stop dust getting into them. Jeans need to be carefully selected. I wear cinch jeans white label my waste is 31 and my actual leg length is 36 so i buy 38's this stops riding up over calf when riding. Do not buy too short. Your hat needs to be big. Its a big sun over there... Try hats on here to get size right. Might be best to buy first one in person to get size right. It needs to fit snug on head and when you flick front brim in doesn't lift up on forehead. This indicates you won't blow it when chasing a beast. But also doesn't give head ache. Wear for at least ten mins in shop before purchase. Heed this advice. All of it. Remember the guy behind the counter is behind the counter hes not a cowboy. Be polite to him but firm in following this advice. Have hair short around sides and off forehead for best and comfy fit. I have worn lots of different jeans and I reiterate that the cinch white label are the best. They are designed to ride in and offer room for comfort. Buy 5 plus pairs as everything you wear can only be worn for a day. You will be out of sorts enough without having to do washing every 5 minutes. Do not tell them you know much about horses or riding. They'll ask you whats your riding like out of ten. Say 4 or 5 maybe. They have special horses put aside for experienced people. 1 in 8 chopper pilots die. Lots of broken legs arms cuts snake bites heat exhaustion. Boils like basketballs etc occur. The cattle will try and kill you. The work will kill you and if not your head stockman after the first week of pleasantries will too. If he's your friend then the rest of stockcamp will. There are no hand rails or safety nets. Check everywhere for snakes. They get everywhere. Drink what ever water is on offer. No matter the colour. Do exactly as they do. Every thing is done for a reason. Its the best experience you'll have if you ready your mind and can cope with not being able to cope. Good luck.'
