So Seth and I have changed jobs and now are teachers in the public school system in the same city as last year. I know that we have been really bad at blogging but I'm hoping with all the future desk warmming that we will be doing we can blog more and keep up with our life.
Today during school I had a firedrill during my extra school class. Here I am in this classroom with 7 year olds that only know a few words in english and an announcement comes on the intercom stating the time when the firedrill will start. The kids relate back to me and I figure this is no prob it will be the same as those in the states right? Wrong.
I have no teacher in my area that speaks english so I am just watching what the other teachers do and what my kids are telling me to do. We all go outside and the first thing that is different is right then. I forget to have the kids change shoes from their inside sandals to their outside shoes. Oh well, we are halfway across the yard now and can't do anything about it. Actually its at thiis time I realize one of my kids doesn't have any shoes on at all!
The second difference is after we exit. There are three buildings in this school and at the corner of the one that we pass is a teacher and two smoke cans to pretend that the building is really on fire. Ok, that's interesting.
Thrid difference: After all the kids and teachers are in the school yard, someone on the thrid floor of the "burning" building waves a towels out the window in signal that they are trapped inside. At that moment two administrators rush inside with a stretcher. At the same time an abulance drives into the yard and stops at the entrance of the building. Then the two admins come back out with a kid loaded on the stretcher and continue to load him into the back of the abulance. Afterwards the abulance drives off, with sirens and lights, but only to the edge of the school.
Forth difference: A real firetruck drives up to the school and aims water at the building! Sure firetrucks come to the schools back home but I have never seen one shot water. At first it was at the building then they shot it into the air. This amazed all the little kids I had and therefore I think it was for show.
Fifth difference: After the firetruck stopped spraying water, a few of the firemen came to the middle of the yard and set a real fire inside a lined box. Then brought four fire extinguishers next to them. Four of the sixth graders were selected and allowed to use the fire extinguishers to put out the fire. It created a huge cloud of smoke that the kids were all scared of.
Thats when all the youunger kids went back inside, uncluding me and my kids. I have to apologize for not having taken any pictures myself but in the rush of things I left my phone in the classroom. The picture for this blog is taken from the internet but its the same as the trucks we saw today. If you notice on the side it shows the number to call in case of emergencies: 119. The reverse of that in the states. Oh and the trucks are a lot smaller just like all the trucks here in Asia.
Well I hope you enjoyed my experience. I hope to share more in the near future.

Holly Johnson How very nice to hear from you! It has been a long time. We have wondered if you made the move and got new jobs. It will be more than challenging to teach in a public school. I think you will be learning some Korean or finding a translator. I would like to have a ground address for you, please. I care about you. love, Aunt Holly
