So today we went to an international event. The Rock Climbing World Cup! Seth and I got into rock climbing when we were engaged and we have loved it ever since. We didn't know if they had rock walls in Korea but we brought our gear but not our rope, which we regret now. This outside climbing wall is only a 30 min walk from our apartment and its free! Now its too cold to climb so we will just have to wait till the spring to start climbing again.
Seth first spotted a poster for the event about a month ago. We were so excited to go. Then the Thursday before our boss tells us that there is a company pinic/hike on Saturday and attendance is mandatory. As you can imagine we were a little peeved. But that is Korean life for you, everything at the last minute. Somehow Seth was able to get us out of going to the hike. So we were free for Sat and Sun to go to the events!!
Saturday morning, bright and early at 8, we set out for the rock climbing event! Come to find out the events didn't start till 9:30. So we sat around for an hour watching the forgieners get ready. As the event started I wrote down all the countries that were represented: Belgium, Norway, Slovenia, France, Korea, Japan, Russia, Indonesia, Maylasia, Canada, Mongolia, Austria, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Espana (Spain), Tawain, and China. Austria had the most climbers, 4 girls and 3 guys for lead climbing. Russia had the most for speed climbing.
Saturday's events were good but they were just the qualifying rounds. Each person had to climb two walls and the score of the combined two determined if they made it into the finals. Some countries did great, Austria, Canada, Spain, and 2 of the 12 Koreans (the sponsering country can have up to 12 althetes). Some didn't do all that great. There was one girl from Mongolia that was so small and no muscle, she didn't get up 5 feet before getting stuck and falling. The event was in both Korean and English which was fanastic for us.
Sundays event was packed! Seth went in the morning while I talked to my parents but we went after church for the lead climbing finals and we had to stand for the entire thiing. Luckily Seth found a spot close to the front so we had a good view despite the fact we had to stand. Surprisingly Korea won both the Men's and Women's finals. Now everyone will go to Japan for the Final Worldcup Event. It was a great day and we can't wait till next years world cup!
