Another overnight bus took us to Iguassu Falls. After a frustrating few days we were really looking forward to it and it really didn't disappoint.
Having never been in a helicopter Pete was keen to do one over the falls so we were lucky to have our first view of the falls from the air. Our pilot was intent at terrifying us and I've been told that I spent the entire journey screaming like a banshee! At one point I was certain we were upside down, but we did get some great photos!
After the helicopter we headed to the Brazilian side of the falls which is known as the better side for panoramic views. I've never seen so many butterflies as we did at Iguassu, they will happily stay on your hand or live on your hat as a few did with Pete. The views were fantastic too but the falls were 100 times more breathtaking from the other (Argentinian) side the next day. After a walkway of a couple of hundred metres you suddenly come out right at the top of the largest and most powerful waterfall. The power of the rush of water is absolutely awesome and we were shocked into silence by it for quite a while. We also got the chance to take a boat ride right into some of the smaller waterfalls. Seeing some of the other boats later it didn't look like it was the usual state of business but our group just screamed and screamed to get drenched and we really did get wet! An unexpected part of the day was the chance to swim in the falls which we also got to do towards the end of the day. It's definitely worth visiting the Brazilian side of the falls for the views but the Argentinian side is definitely more interactive and immersive. They even have the Disney-style queuing (and snack costs) which the Brazilian side doesn't seemed to have cottoned onto quite yet.
Outside of the falls Foz is a pretty large town which I didn't expect. The waterfalls definitely dominate the activities here but we made sure to take advantage of the Brazilian barbecue (twice), an eat-all-u-can experience which basically involves them bringing skewers of meat over to your table until you pass out.
We were also taken to a barbecue at the house of one of the tour guides which was billed as a cultural experience at a local's house but turned out to be basically a drinking opportunity and money making venture for G Adventures!
