Bonito is a small, mainly touristy town, in the Pantanal, a huge wetland region of Brazil. The Pantanal is such a huge area of the country that it took us a good 5 hour drive to get to Bonito from the farm we'd previously been at.
Bonito's big draw is its crystal clear rivers, full of beautiful fish and perfect for snorkelling. People come from all over Brazil to snorkel here so it transpired that it was very unfortunate that we had pulled up on a bank holiday! Despite Laura asking us a couple of days beforehand whether we wanted to snorkel or not and us saying yes, we found out on the way to Bonito that the snorkelling was full on the two days that we would be there and so if we wanted to snorkel we would pay the same (very expensive) rate for a half day on the day we arrived. Something told us she hadn't bothered to pre book......
On arrival however, it was very grey (not great for snorkelling visibility) and pretty drizzly. We felt obliged to go snorkelling even though one by one the others dropped out until there were only six of us left. We reluctantly piled into the minibus but we were barely half way when we encountered bad roads due to the rain and so just couldn't go on. A sense of relief was obvious in the bus, but we soon discovered that with two full days in Bonito, there was nothing else to do in the town.....
Laura tried to occupy us (a bit). She showed us how to make caipirinhas, the national drink and we had quite a few...... Another day we went to a cachaca factory to see how the local fire water was made but there was very little else. The most we left the hotel was to go to a kind of water park by the river. It was quite a nice afternoon with beautiful clear water and lots of fish, and even a flying fox into the water but it was a little drizzly so we didn't stay long. The most frustrating part of the three days was seeing Pete's customers that we met in Santa Cruz who told us that they'd easily gotten onto a snorkelling trip and they had turned up a day after us. So it turned out that Laura hadn't even tried getting us on a trip....... By this point you can imagine that G Adventures weren't particularly high on our Xmas card list!!
The highlight of Bonito? Discovering acai berries. They serve frozen pulp with banana and granola - delicious! I'm bringing it to the UK!!!!
